It’s safe to say that there’s a scene building around Bermondsey and craft beer at the minute The railway arches underneath the line running south from London Bridge are home to some of the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming craft breweries, including Ansbach & Hopday, Partizan, The Kernel and Brew by Numbers. However it was when these breweries started opening their doors to the public that the Bermondsey Beer Mile became a thing. For craft beer fans, visiting a brewery taproom on a Saturday afternoon is now as commonplace as going to the pub, as punters are rewarded with access to the freshest beer a brewery can offer.

Fourpure is at the beginning of the mile (or the end depending on where you start), based about 20 minutes from Bermondsey station on Rotherhithe New Road– Founded by Tom and Dan Lowe a mere three years ago, their rise has been quick, with the core range can be found on tap at various craft beer pubs across the capital including Draft House and Kentish Town’s Rose & Crown.
The brand name comes from those four, all important ingredients that make a beer: Water, Barley, Hops and Yeast. As well as the core range, the taproom is the only place you can sample one off brews and specialties from their craft range on tap.
Two new releases from their range aimed at the slightly more discerning drinker are Shapeshifter, a 6.4% West Coast IPA, dry hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Centennial hops, and Flatiron a 4.7% American Red ale, which balances citrusy hops with toffee notes from the malt and turns out to be very drinkable indeed.
Like most breweries, they’re keen to experiment and regularly release one offs to support businesses or events in London.
